The Best family farm was purchased from the Government in 1863, when Dovedale Valley was originally subdivided & sold. Job Best died in 1891, followed by his wife, Eliza, in 1909, while their three youngest children continued farming there until the last son died during WWII. The farm was then passed on in 1946 to a cousin, Norman Win, who had returned from the war with his English war-bride. The farm was eventually sold to a neighbour, Maurie Thorn, in 1967 - by the early 1970's the now-empty
cottage was being used to store hay. Later came various tenants then subdivision, with the cottage finally restored in 2002.
