Replacing Scrim & Wallpaper
Original scrim & wallpaper is removed, revealing a few surprises
, with tacks lifted & sarking nails punched in. Gaps between the sarkingInternal wooden planks nailed over timber framing, providing both structural bracing & a surface for wallpaper & roofing iron to be attached to are filled with adhesive foam, to reduce draughts and dust, and also to provide a continuous surface for pasting the scrim onto. Sarking is planed down to even out excess undulations between the boards.
Sarking is sealed, and a first layer of latex paste applied directly to the boards. Scrim is stapled at the top, to hold it in place, then pasted on to the prepared surface.
Excess scrim is trimmed to fit. Lining paper, hung horizontally, helps minimise surface undulations.
Anaglypta wallpaper, hung vertically and painted, completes the new surface. By replacing the scrim, rather than lining the sarking with gib board, the resulting surfaces have preserved the integrity of the Cottage.
