Worcesterberry

(Ribes divaricatum)

On the bush Ripe

Worcesterberry is a blackcurrant & gooseberry hybrid, with fruit looking distinctly like a cross between these two. The berries are surprisingly sweet to eat when ripe, much more so than fruit from either of its parents.

Sadly, the plants are covered in ferocious thorns; indeed, the thorns are far worse than any you find on a gooseberry. No wonder this fruit is not available commercially.
